Phase 2-3 Word Family UNO

Practice reading common word families to aid reading fluency in Phases 2 and 3. Inspired by the popular card game of UNO, this variety aids a rapid recall of high frequency word families. Word Families not only share the same end sounds (meaning they rhyme) but these sounds also share the same spelling, as in cat, fat, mat.

The words families selected (aside from -all) feature in both Wylie and Durrell's list of the 37 most frequent phonograms found in primary grade words (nearly 500 words are derived from these 37 phonograms) and Fry's List of 38 common phonograms and word families (more than 600 one-syllable words can be made using these).

We've also included a set of blank cards where you can add further word families.

Phase 2-5 Phonics UNO (adaptable)

You can tailor these game cards to practice a phonics concept of your choice. Why not adapt the game to practise reading words that contain alternative spellings such as wait, take, play, eight (Phase 5) or beginning consonant blends (Phase 4)? The most common initial consonant blends being: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fr, tr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm, sp and st.
